STORAGE OF WEALTH SINCE 1983

500% ↑ 2000 – 2020

The owner of the Argyle diamond mine, Rio Tinto, estimates that Argyle pink diamond prices have appreciated in price at the mine’s private tenders by 500% over the past 20 years. Now the mine has closed with demand for Argyle pink diamonds never greater as prices continue to rise.

Rare Australian Pink Diamonds

In 1979 a glittering pink diamond was discovered on top of an anthill in a remote part of the Kimberly wilderness in Western Australia. When the subsequent Argyle mine commenced production in 1983, this would be the beginning of an extraordinary story about the search for the very rarest of rare diamonds created over 1.6 billion years ago.

The Argyle Diamond Mine has produced over 90% of the world’s pink diamonds during the last 38 years. However, deposits were limited and the Argyle Diamond Mine ceased operations in November 2020. Whilst the demand and popularity of pink diamonds grows stronger supply from the world’s primary producer has come to an end.

They say that it would take twenty years to fill a crystal wine glass with the very finest pinks discovered at the Argyle Diamond Mine during its comparatively short history.

Yourdiamonds.comTM is honoured to have been appointed to conduct the First Public Sealed Bid Tender of Australian Pink Diamonds. We are proud to have been entrusted with mandates from the esteemed collector, Ms Di Fitzpatrick of Brisbane, a South Australian financial corporation and eight private collectors to offer for sale so many beautiful and rare pink diamonds all of which are appearing on the secondary market for the very first time.

Diosma ‘Di’ Fitzpatrick

THE FITZPATRICK COLLECTION

A Most Important and Celebrated Private Collection of Rare Jewels from The Argyle Diamond Mine

In 1988 Ms Fitzpatrick visited the World Expo in Brisbane. The recently launched Argyle Diamond Mine had a stand at the Expo displaying their finest fancy-coloured pink diamonds of the day. When Ms Fitzpatrick saw the Argyle exhibition it was the beginning of a new chapter in her life. In her own words:

“From that moment on I became fascinated with these beautiful pink diamonds reminiscent of my childhood hero. I think she was called Princess Pearly, a character that lived at the bottom of the ocean always appearing with her pearl tiara with a central pink diamond. When I visited the World Expo in Brisbane in 1988, I went straight to the Argyle stand and fell in love with the stones they were offering for sale. I acquired a group of these diamonds, my first acquisition, through Hardy Bros who I believe were the Brisbane representatives of the Argyle mine. I remember being mesmerized by a very pink heart-shaped diamond that Argyle had pictured on the front cover of one of their glossy coffee table publications. That diamond with its beautiful pink hue became one of my favourites. I bought a few more stones in the years immediately following the Expo.”

Ms Fitzpatrick used to wear all her pink diamonds as jewellery. “The matching pair of 1.15 carat round brilliant cuts were my stud earrings. These were one of only two matching pairs I have ever seen. My darling heart-shaped pink diamond I wore in a ring,”

Gemmologist’s Note:

This gem is truly exceptional on several accounts. Its size is notable as the quantity of stones of 2 carats and above in the Argyle annual tender is typically 2 or 3 only, but what sets this stone apart from other Argyle pinks of such size is the round shape, depth of colour and clarity. Commonly fancy coloured diamonds are cut in fancy shapes in order to maximise their weight and colour. Not so with this stone that has no obvious sacrifices to the cut to achieve the 2.00 carat weight. The GIA-graded fancy intense purplish-pink colour with estimated Argyle colour of 3PP further adds to the stone’s striking appeal that is not marred by any clearly apparent inclusions. If this stone had been mined in the past decade it would certainly have been prominent in an Argyle tender with its own name. This stone will always remain one of the most unique pink diamonds from the Argyle mine.

Gemmologist’s Note:

When gem types are rare, it is even rarer to find two that match and can thus be considered a pair. In order to match, the weights, shape, colour and to a lesser extent – clarity must be near identical. These two stones are each greater than a carat which makes them unique even in solitude. Being of exactly the same weight and a desirable purplish-pink colour of intense grade, these two stones make a unique and splendid pair.

Gemmologist’s Note:

Visually these two stones are almost inseparable, defying the slightly different GIA colour grades. The rich purplish-pink colour and identical proportions for the two stones makes the stones a perfect match. The inclusions are difficult to see, helped by the main inclusion for the lower clarity (I2) stone being only a white feather on one side.
